In our article “5 Ways To Love Yourself“, one of the ways mentioned was to let go of your past. It is hard to move forward when you are beating yourself up over what you did and didn’t do. And it is even harder to love yourself when you can’t let go.

Why must you let go?

There are many reasons why you should let go. It could be because of someone. He/she could be affecting you in a negative way and it brings a lot of damage to you as a person in more ways than one. Or someone you have grown apart from due to conflicting interests and changes in lifestyle.

It could be because of the situation that you are in. You are deeply unhappy with your current circumstance. And you feel where you are no longer aligned to your goals and dream.

It could be your past and fears holding you back. You cannot accept what has happened and it is eating you up inside. Or you are afraid of facing your fears and imagine them happening to you again and again.

It is time to let go and move on from all of the above. Negative people or surroundings breeds negative feelings in you. In order to be happy, the negativity needs to be removed from your life as soon as possible and as much as possible.

So now how do I let go?

Face the truth

Denying that you are not happy in your current state doesn’t change the fact that you are still not happy. Stop denying and face the truth. Take a good hard look at yourself and your situation. Yes, you are unhappy. Yes, you want to be in a better situation. Admitting the truth will make you stronger in the process. You know that you need and want change and are making steps to improve your life.

 

Trust in Allah that you will be alright

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear”

Quran 2:286

Whatever you going through, Allah sees. When you feel that there is no listening, Allah hears. Whatever obstacles that you go through, Allah knows that you can get through them. Place your trust in Him and insha allah, you will be alright.

 

Focus only on what can be changed.

The past cannot be changed. It has happened. Learn from it and move on. Take notes on what you can do better. If another similar situation arises, you know what to do. And look towards the future. Plan your next step. What can you do to make your life better? How can you move to a better place? And put your plans to work. You will be too busy to re-enact what happened in the past.

 

Forgive those who wronged you

The hardest step ever. How can you forgive someone when they hurt you so much? How can you forgive them when they never apologised and express regrets? How is that possible? It is hard to imagine the pain you must have gone through. And forgiving them will be the last thing you would do. But how long are you going to keep that pain inside you? Keep it until they apologise? What if they never seek for your forgiveness? What then?

Forgive them, even when you don’t want to. Forgive them, even when you feel they do not deserve it. They are negativity that you must remove from your life. It is time to let them go and seek your own happiness.

 

Nobody said it is easy. But life needs to go on and you deserve to love yourself, love the people you are with and the life you are leading. May Allah eases all our burden and gives us strength to overcome all our burdens.
