When you look in the mirror, what do you always notice first? Pimples? Dark circles? Eye bags? Messy hair? You start looking at yourself even closer and wish that you have bigger eyes, a sharper nose or prominent cheekbones. After analyzing every single thing that you dislike, you feel a little depressed and never feel good enough to be out into the world.


Why is it that the first things we see about ourselves are our flaws?

Why are we criticizing the person in the mirror?

Why do we find it hard to love ourselves?


Humans are constant work in progress. We have our strengths and we have our weaknesses. No two people can be the same and that is alright. You do not NEED to be the same as everyone else. And why should you? You are unique and special and it is about time you realise that.

Here are 5 Ways To Love Yourself

1. Remember that Allah created you.

“He is the One Who has made perfectly everything He has created: He began the creation of human beings with clay, And made his progeny from a quintessence of the nature of a fluid despised: But He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him something of His spirit…” Quran 32:7-9

Know that Allah made no mistakes when He made you. Everything that He creates is perfect and everything that is good in you comes from him. Always be blessed with what you have as Allah has chosen everything for you.


2. Let go of your past.

There is nothing you can do to change the past. You cannot change what you said, what you did or what you thought. The more you dwell on what could have been, you are hurting not only yourself, but the people around you and your future. Forgive those who have wronged you. Don’t hold on to that pain. Learn to let go and free yourself from the shackles of the past.


3. List down all the things you love about yourself.

Look in the mirror again and look for things that make you beautiful and unique. It wouldn’t be hard to find. That smile, that twinkle in your eyes and that cute nose. Learn to see the beauty in you, physically, emotionally and mentally. What we see in the mirror is a reflection of what we see in the world around us. If we see something that makes us unhappy in the mirror, the world will look like such a disappointment. If we see something that pleases us in the mirror, the world is for us to conquer.


4. Do something every day that makes you happy.

It does not have to be something big like travelling,

It can be something simple like wearing your favourite outfit, eating that cupcake that you have been eyeing or taking a little ‘ME’ time and watch that funny video. Whatever that makes you happy. This is a crucial step especially when you had a rough day and need to wind down. Don’t be so hard on yourself and give yourself a little treat. It can change your day drastically.


5. Expand your interests.

It is a great feeling when you learnt something new. The knowledge that you receive and the aura that surrounds you will be give you a new perspective. This will breathes a renewed energy in you. Pick up a musical instrument. Learn a new language. Go to a cooking class. You have the right to lead an amazing life. Use the time you have to explore a side of you that you didn’t know exist and make new friends.


The most important thing is that you don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone has something different and it would be pointless to compare who is better. Keep a circle of family and friends who will always support and encourage you. Who look for the best in you. Distance yourself from people who bring you down. You don’t need the negativity in your life. Remember that you should always love yourself.
